Step 1: Double-Click the File
Before you try any other ways to open SDR files, start by double-clicking the file icon. The file should open automatically. If it doesn’t open, or you see an error message, move on to Step 2.

There are now dozens of software defined radio packages that support the ultra cheap RTL-SDR. On this page we will attempt to list, categorize and provide a brief overview of each software program. We categorize the programs into general purpose software, single purpose software, research software and software compatible with audio piping. If you know of a program that is missing please leave. Before we continue, we'll have to install the Windows driver for the RTL USB stick and then swap it for a 'low level access' driver. The default driver assumes you'll just be using the RTL-SDR for watching TV or radio but we want to be able to control it to do much more. To open an.sdt file, you'll need the SmartDraw program. A trial version of SmartDraw software is available free for download at SmartDraw.com. File extension sdr is associated with SmartDraw, a software graphic tool, developed by SmartDraw, LLC. SmartDraw is a visual processors and it is used to create rich high quality presentations, graphs and charts. SDR is the default format used by SmartDraw for its drawings. Probably proprietary format that cannot be opened in 3rd party software.
Step 2: Choose the Right Program
There are many different programs you can use to open SDR files. If the file doesn’t open when you double-click it, you may not have one of these programs on your computer. Try installing the most common programs associated with SDR files, like Sounder Music, SmartDraw Drawing, or QuickView Pro for DOS Soundcard Driver. If none of these programs work, move to Step 3.
Step 3: Figure Out the File Type
The file type can give you a clue as to which programs can open your SDR file. Files with the SDR extension are usually Raster Image Files. If you’re not sure what the file type is, follow the steps below to find it:
Using Windows:
- Right-click the file’s icon
- Click “Properties”
- Find the file type listed under “Type of File”
Using a Mac:
- Right-click the file’s icon
- Click “More Info”
- Find the file type listed under “Kind”
What Is Sdr File Type
Once you know the file type, you can use this information do some searching for other possible programs that utilize file extension SDR or that open Raster Image Files. If this still doesn't help, move to Step 4.

Step 4: Check with the Software Developer
The most common programs associated with SDR files are all created by different software developers. These developers can help you if you’re having trouble opening your SDR file. Find your program in the left column of the table below and contact the developer listed in the right column.

Step 5: Download a Universal File Viewer
If you have completed Steps 1 through 4 and you still can’t open your SDR file, it’s time to try a universal file viewer like File Magic (Download). A universal file viewer is a program you can use to open hundreds of different types of files (depending on the format). Note: If your SDR file isn’t compatible with a universal file viewer, it will open in binary format.
